Previous successes win new work for William Smith

Following a competitive tender, William Smith was appointed by Seymour (Civil Engineering Contractors) Ltd to provide around 100 directional and informative signs for a by-pass development in Shiremoor, North Tyneside.

As part of an ongoing housing development, Seymour was contracted by the main developer to build the by-pass complete with installation of all traffic signage, to be in place prior to completion of the development.

"The by-pass is a continuation of a major road network around Shiremoor and forms the last link in the chain," explains Seymour's Contracts Manager, Ron Gibson.

All the signs were manufactured from 3mm aluminium pate base, using 3M Diamond Grade DG³ and covered with Protective Overlay Film.

"We have used William Smith in the past and they are a good, reputable supplier and the site agent was also aware of the company, which gave us confidence in their capability. 3M Diamond Grade DG³ and Protective Overlay Film were specified to comply with traffic regulation requirements."

William Smith completed the work in two phases, and the signs were supplied in two batches.

"We needed a very fast turn round, as the required information was supplied to us with an extremely short lead-time, and William Smith delivered all the signage within our deadlines."

Another recent project also came about as a result of previous work William Smith completed and although it didn't have such a fast turnaround, the customer was equally pleased with the end result.

Having been impressed with events boards used in Scarborough, Filey Town Council's Tourism Partnership approached Scarborough Borough Council with a view to installing similar signage in Filey and worked with the Local Authority to develop the final design.

"William Smith was chosen for this particular project as we have developed a good working relationship with the company and they had produced the signage for Scarborough, which was of a similar design," explains Scarborough BC's Evron Centre Manager, Tourism & Culture, Nick Butterworth.

However, obtaining approvals and agreeing locations had not been a straightforward task: "It took 18 months in total as approvals were required from North Yorkshire Council's Highways Department as well as from Scarborough Borough Council. We had planned to install the signage on the main A165 route into Filey, but as the Highways Department determined that they fell into the category of advertising boards, this was not permitted. We, therefore, had to site them on Scarborough Road and Muston Road, the B routes into the resort."

"Once everything was approved they were completed and delivered by William Smith well within the timescale required for installation before Spring Bank Holiday. We have had good feedback from the Town Council and everyone involved in the process has been very pleased with the finished result."

Using components from its renowned Stylos Fingerpost System, the units produced and supplied by William Smith feature specially turned aluminium caps and specially turned aluminium collars with a gold highlight band in the central recessed section.

The two identical double-sided panels were cut to shape and completed with full colour Scotchprint inkjet graphics applied to both sides, incorporating the Filey crest and a photographic image of Filey Bay encircled by a border with the text ‘Welcome to Filey - A Treasure to Discover' on one face, and ‘Come Back Soon' on the reverse. Two blank white non-reflective plates were added to the lower section for the display of events information, such as Filey Regatta and Festival Week.
