Entries called for 2009 Sign Design Awards

The Sign Design Society is calling for entries to its 2009 Awards competition for innovation, effectiveness, quality and excellence in signing and wayfinding design.

Sign and Design Awards Logo

The purpose of these awards is to recognise all that is excellent in the field of signing graphics, systems and wayfinding wherever in the world it may be happening. Previous Sign Design Awards have included entries from all continents and highlighted the diversity and originality of solutions addressing a wide range of challenges in many different environments.

The Sign Design Society expects winning entries to demonstrate environmental awareness, sustainability and accessibility as well as skill in design, planning and creativity. This year the Sign Design Society is inviting entries in four categories:

The Public Wayfinding Award

sponsored by BAA Airports.
Open to projects concerned with helping people navigate public spaces towns, cities, local communities; parks and countryside; hospitals; universities; transport hubs; museums, etc. The size of the project is not a particular criterion, rather how the brief has been met in the most appropriate way.

The Commercial Signing and Identity Award

sponsored by Principle Group.
This award involves the commercial and retail sector - shops and shopping centres; offices and advertising as well as identity and image creation projects and implementation of schemes for businesses large and small. Submissions can range from a one off sign or logo to more broadly based projects.

The Product Innovation and Sign and Systems Design Award

sponsored by Lea Valley Colour.
This award will recognise original ways of making signing work whether using new materials and structures for more traditional signs, the use of electronic and new display media or completely new approaches for information transmission to users.

The Student Award

sponsored by Info Sign Systems.
This award is an opportunity for the next generation of designers, currently in college or university (or even school), to showcase their ideas for real and potential projects in any area of signing and wayfinding. Submissions may be part of course work or projects actually realised, but the same general considerations described above will be given by the judges.

There will also be a Grand Prix Award, sponsored by Merson Sign Design, for the most outstanding entry of all.

The closing date for entries is 31 May 2009. A distinguished panel of judges representing a wide range of expertise and industry experience will decide on the winners and prizes will be awarded in October 2009, at a ceremony hosted in London and sponsored by No-Nonsense Design. The winners’ trophies are being designed and manufactured by fwdesign in collaboration with A J Wells & Sons.
