Hi Mikey,

I was speaking to Simon at Lettering Systems Unlimited about this.

It is probably worth giving him a call as he sells Mimaki and Roland products, and really knows his products.

From the chat it sounds like you may benefit from a print and cut system. These tend to print and then go back to do the cutting all in one go, as opposed to if you had a printer and a seperate cutter you would spend more time loading up the vinyl on both machines and then getting it aligned just right on the cutter.
The print and cut machines are just easier to use.

If you want to do just vinyl cutting, you would need to turn the heaters off - so may be best to use first thing in the morning before the heaters have been used.

The Roland VersaCAMM range is the world's best-selling integrated print & cut, and from what I have heard would be a good choice, although depending on your requirements there may be better options.

An alternative setup would be to go with a print and cut machine and get a small cutter in addition.

Thanks for your reply Wafzak,

Yes I am looking to start up a sign/design company and will be printing on self-adhesive vinyl and yes I would be cutting vinyl as well, however I thought a separate cutter would be best as I guess the only thing with a printer/cutter is that you cant do both things at once?

Can you get a printer that also contour cuts as I use a Mimaki CG-160 to cut and co-cut.

I would like to be able to print on other media and print business cards, flyers etc.

Could you give me some advice on a printer that might suit my needs?

Thanks

Mikey

Hi,

Different machines suit different requirements. I am not sure what your priorities are here. Is speed important, what kind of size are you looking at, and what materials are you looking to use e.g. printing on banners etc?

Are you looking to start a new company doing sign making? A combined printer/cutter may be the way forward if you are.
If you are starting, a Mimaki JV5 is not exactly cheap, so until you build up your client base, I would probably opt for a cheaper one, although the JV5 is not exactly expensive in the scheme of things.

I have got the VersaCAMM VP-300 (or 540 for a larger one). This seems to be a great all round product that is quite good value. It is combined with a cutter though.

I have seen the VersaArt RS-640 Inkjet Printer which is another good product from Roland, but never used it.

Mimaki was the other manufacturer that I was looking at when I bought the Versacamm and they came a very close 2nd. The Mimaki printers are pretty good and come with a 2 year warranty I believe, compared to Roland's 12 month one. Although this looks like it may be factored into the price.

Mimaki do good printers, and quite often I think it is worth sticking with what you are familiar with.
