Pro-Tect – working hard to satisfy appetite for safety signs on demand

Harry Walker with Roland SolJet printer

Pro-Tect Safety Signs in Weston-Super- Mare produces hundreds of safety and traffic signs every day.

Its bank of four Roland SolJet XC-540s are running almost constantly to help keep up with the demand for anything from rigid and flexible signs on materials ranging from self-adhesives and banner material to reflective media, canvases and everything in between. And that demand is growing, according to Graphics Department member Harry Walker.

“Business has been booming and we’re beginning to see the fruits of expanding into some exciting new areas using the internet,” he says. Pro-Tect’s business was originally dominated by signs for the emergency services to deploy at accident scenes or urgent road repairs or traffic re-direction, but now a strategy of targeting contractors, such as utilities, road works and construction companies, is starting to pay off. “Our customers are dotted all over the UK and most demand a quick turnaround - an emergency water leak, for example, or temporary traffic diversion. And they also have a diverse set of requirements, which are sometimes highly localised – ‘such and such business is open as usual’ when digging up a high-street, for example,” says Harry.

And there is no greater advert for the safety signage market’s appetite for on-demand than the success of Pro-Tect’s online ‘design your own sign’ service, launched around a year ago, which the Roland machines are critical to.

“Customers can design their own safety or traffic sign online, which if ordered before noon they will get it the next working day, anywhere in the UK. Thanks to the Roland machines we can produce and despatch same day and we do so with 100s of signs,” says Harry.

“For a service such as this, it’s important for us to be able to produce high quality signage, quickly and the Roland machines tick all the boxes. They really are up to the challenge posed by the variety of the work that comes in and the roll-up mechanism makes them very attractive. You can literally put a whole roll on the back and leave it to print straight through – unless there’s a problem with the way the material is manufactured, the Roland won’t let you down.”

And to cope with the growing demand for Pro-Tect’s services, the company has recently invested in a 74” wide SolJet™ Pro III XJ-740 printer, its fifth Roland, to further improve the service and options offered to customers. To succeed in the safety and traffic signage sector, Harry says, requires striking the perfect balance between quality and speed of output and a good gsolrasp of materials in order to ensure you engineer cost effective yet robust solutions.

Pro-Tect uses a range of design packages depending on the job at hand, as well as Roland’s VersaWorks RIP, which every Roland machine comes equipped with as standard. They are also a fan of the Roland’s robust Eco-Sol Max inks. Both solutions are a core part of the Roland synergy of hardware, inks and RIP that makes for easy to use yet powerful wide format digital print solutions. Updates to VersaWorks are made available for free download online so users always have the latest version.

Tennants road safety signs: Off the shelf, bespoke or design your own

Based centrally in Nottingham and founded in 1967, Tennants UK Ltd has become one of the UK’s leading suppliers of road signs, equipment and reflective vinyls.

The company’s Signs Division specialises in the manufacture of temporary road signs – from ‘Chapter 8’ standard signs in frames taken directly off the shelf, to bespoke signage manufactured in-house and to short lead times with the aid of the most advanced machinery on the market.

The recent launch of the Traffic Pro Sign software enables any PC user to design and size their own bespoke temporary road signs. Traffic Pro automatically calculates the x-height and size of sign to meet full highway specification. With the latest in digital print technology, Tennants UK, along with clients who run digital printers, are able to print and in turn manufacture the complete sign using various reflective vinyl and substrates.

Tennants UK also recently won a contract to manufacture temporary road signs via Nordis Signs (a May Gurney PLC company) which was set to supply a local high speed traffic management company. Due to the workload at the time Steve Wright, Nordis Signs Manager, requested Tennants UK to assist with the order.

Steve said “The 190 signs were not only excellently priced but were delivered to us three days early. This is the type of service we have come to expect from Tennants UK. Many thanks to Grant and Tracey for all their help”.

The Equipment Supplies Division products include traffic cones and lamps, road sign frames and pedestrian barriers, and a range of hi viz clothing and personal protective equipment. Summer 2012 saw the launch of the new Navigator road cone. Made to the highest of standards this two piece 750mm cone is the company’s lowest ever priced road cone.

From a three year economy to 12 year prismatic grade reflective, Tennants UK is the UK’s master distributor for Orafol reflectives branded as ‘Oralite’.

Most notably in the vinyls division is the increase in number of vehicle chevron kit enquiries, says Tennants. To satisfy this increasing demand, the company has a complete library of vehicles with chevrons that are ‘contour cut to fit’, complete with drawings and fitting instructions all of which comply to Chapter 8 regulations. Yellow cast fluorescent is cut first as solid back panels with the red reflective strips tabbed over the top. This unique method allows for the kits to be taken off in years to come without the hassle of taking reflective off.tennants logo

When it comes to chevron kits, Tennants UK now offers a unique hi intensity prismatic red reflective which provides greater reflectivity than the standard engineering grade and carries a 10 year guarantee. This product is ideal for vehicles stopping on high speed roads or for those who wish to stand out from the crowd with better visibility day and night.

For customers who manufacture their own kits Tennants simply offers a two year Orafol cast fluorescent along with a choice of red Oralite reflectives; engineering, hi intensity or prismatic, slit to 150mm x 50m rolls.
