'Noah & Nancy' signage creates safer environment for school children

One of the new signs designed to be seen earlier by drivers for increased road safety in Grimsby and Cleethorpes. More than 200 finished 20mph signs, incorporating a safety message and a specially designed logo have been supplied by William Smith for School Safety Zones in Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

North East Lincolnshire Council’s principal Traffic Engineer, David Poucher explains, "Using Neighbourhood Renewal Funding, which is provided to undertake projects in areas of deprivation, we have worked closely with the Police, highway engineers and the Education Department on a number of joint initiatives. One of these was to look at introducing 20mph zones around schools, based entirely on signing. It involved re-badging of existing 20mph zones and the introduction of new signs in non-traffic calming areas."

When children leave school en masse, any problems that arise generally tend to be further away from the school rather than immediately outside the gates.

"Although School Safety Zone wording was used on the signs, we were looking to introduce a formal 20mph Zone rather than an advisory one. The special logo that has been incorporated into the signs, featuring the ‘Noah & Nancy’ characters, was designed by Education Department staff and these characters will also be used to bring the road safety message into all schools in North East Lincolnshire," said David Poucher.

William Smith produced the signs using full colour Scotchprint graphics on 3M Diamond Grade DG³ Reflective Sheeting, a prismatic reflective material that provides outstanding performance from every viewing angle and distance. This means that signs can be seen sooner and for longer, giving drivers vital extra moments in which to make decisions and thereby increasing road safety.

"We are very pleased with the new signs, which have been well received by both schools and members of the public, and we anticipate seeing a positive benefit for the schools concerned with a reduction in driver speeds. Schools outside of the deprived areas are already asking when they can have this signage."

William Smith won the contract for this project in a competitive tender.

"However, we have usedWilliamSmith previously and developed a good working relationship with them. We have always been more than satisfied with the quality of product, service and delivery they provide. They are one of a small number of manufacturers who readily give helpful advice and I would certainly recommend them to other local authorities," concludes David Poucher.

Spandex introduces innovations to its C-Fix range of exterior sign systems

The C-Fix system has, for years, been regarded as a fingerpost only wayfinding system. Thanks to enhancement of key components, the system can now offer a refreshingly modern approach to plain and simple signs.

Again, as with the Rigid Sheet and Glass Clip systems, sign companies and their customers have the freedom to choose the sheet substrate in both size and shape.

In addition, economic pricing is a feature of this product line, fitting neatly in between both ends of the freestanding post and panel market as a viable alternative offering style and economy.

The system is easy to fabricate and presents a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Furthermore, if fabricating metal signs isn’t part of a sign company’s portfolio, they can still sell these products by liaising with one of Spandex’s Sign System Centres.

David Catanach, Spandex UK’s Business Manager for Sign Systems, adds "Spandex now has by far the widest choice of profiles for flat and curved systems available to sign companies allowing them to offer a range of finished products at very economic prices. Signs using these components are already out there making money for sign companies. We continue to investigate viable designs and products to add to Spandex’s established and industry recognized leading systems."
