Stocksigns delivers for stylish shopping experience and new tube station

London Underground signs on a platform Leading signage manufacturer Stocksigns has recently completed more prestigious projects in the capital.

Most recently is a signage package for the brand new Westfield shopping centre. Situated in the heart of West London, the new centre is the latest flagship shopping centre by the development giant, The Westfield Group.

The high profile opening launch included a speech from London Mayor Boris Johnson and appearances by several famous people from the entertainment world. Extremely tight deadlines were crucial to completing the project on schedule and Stocksigns firmly believes it is one of just a few companies with the manufacturing capabilities to produce the high volume of signs required in such short lead times.

“Stocksigns’ fast turnaround ensured there was no delay in the opening of the centre, which had already attracted a huge amount of media attention,” said Katie Chipperfield, Stocksigns’ Co-ordinator for the project.

Stocksigns provided more than 4000 Health and Safety signs as well as general signage for the vast complex, which boasts 280 shops plus 47 restaurants and bars over 1.6 million square feet (150, 000sq.m.). Westfield London is located approximately three miles from Marble Arch and serves an extensive trade area including high-income suburbs such as Kensington, Holland Park and Notting Hill.

As part of the Westfield development, £170 million was invested in public transport improvements and as a London Underground (LU) approved long-standing manufacturer of vitreous enamel signs for Underground stations, Stocksigns was also involved with these improvements.

The company undertook sign projects for Underground stations serving the shopping centre including the refurbished Shepherd’s Bush Station and the brand new Wood Lane Station.

Stocksigns, incorporating Burnham Signs, completed work for the new Wood Lane station on the Hammersmith & City Line, which has now opened. Stocksigns was contracted by Costain plc to deliver the signage package at the station, opposite BBC Television Centre, in Shepherd’s Bush. The project was completed on schedule in October and is part essential work to provide for London's growing transport needs now, and in the future.

The signage package included vitreous enamel primary, supplementary and door signs including the iconic roundel signs pictured.

“Being involved with Costain, the main contractors, and Ian Ritchie, the architect, right from the beginning of the project allowed Stocksigns to plan the manufacture of the signs and manage the complicated installation with accuracy allowing for demand changes as the project developed,” said Roger Eke, Stocksigns Project Manager.

Wood Lane is the first new station to be built on an existing line (not on a new line or extension) for more than 70 years and brings the number of stations on the Hammersmith & City line to 29. A tube station previously occupying the site was known as Uxbridge Road station closed in October 1940. These days, nearly 46 million people travel each year on the Hammersmith & City line with 149,405 travelling on weekdays. It has been predicted that as many as 6,665 people will use the new Wood Lane station between noon and 3pm on Saturdays now the nearby Westfield London shopping centre has opened.
