Hi Andy,
Firstly may I welcome you to the mad mad world of sign making assuming that is what you intend to do. I am not a sign maker, but work for Doro Tape UK Ltd a company who supplies products to folks like yourself.
Application tape can be a very immotive issue. Some sign makers love a certain type and will not use anything else, whilst others shop around and are happy to use anything as long as it is cheap. But it is important to find one you are happy to work with as it makes the job so much easlier and stops you pulling your hair out, assuming you have more than I do.
The most popular type in the UK is the paper application tape as against the clear filmic type(probably because it is cheaper). I am sure you will be advised that you need different application tapes for different films, but on the whole I have not found that to be the case. In fact it is rare that we supply our customers with more than one type of application tape. It is just a case of finding which one suits your purpose the best.
At Doro Tape we keep it simple and supply basically 2 grades of paper application tapes, a medium tack, which is by far the most popular of our application tapes and a high tack in case the other is not tacky enough. From my experience a good quality medium tack paper appilcation tape should be OK for both the glossy vinyl and the stencil film.
I would also suggest you try using a good spirit based application fluid to help with the application of the vinyl graphics onto vehicles etc as it can be an absolute life saver.
I hope this has been of some assistance and best of luck with everything.
James
