Hi redhedgehog

We are an ex-signmakers with over 30 years of experience in the industry and now focus on supplying LED products. We have a blog with a step by step guide on how to create halo lighting using LEDs that you might find useful. We'll soon be adding lots more masterclasses too. You can find it here:

I hope this helps.

Suppliers Tip :)

2 Main Options:

Import Products - Sounds simple enough but importing products can be a nightmare as I found out, choosing the right supplier and getting the right product delivered in time is more difficult than I first realised. Plus the 20% tax which is added before you even see the product makes this option only good if you importing in bulk.

Pay Supplier - A few suppliers offer led products but there are some cheap led modules which are not great quality. Good suppliers will offer a sample pack for you to view. Always ask.

Overall I have used a several suppliers and even imported from china but with import tax etc its a bit of an unnecessary pain.
2 suppliers I recommend are:

1. Litewave.co.uk
2. Titanleds.com

with the second my preferred.

Hi,

We are a Trade Signage Supplier based in Manchester of all Bespoke Signage and built up letters. We find that the best LED for brightness, usability etc is the Sloan V Series which is availabile from Matel of ThyssenKrupp materials.

Thanks

When looking at halo lighting, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration when choosing the appropriate LED modules:-

1) the depth of the letter - this is important as using a too powerful LED module will create spotting and not give a smooth, equal illumination

2) the stroke width of the letter - we recommend using LEDs that have a 150 degree beam angle, these are normally found on COB (Chip On Board) LED modules. This is so the spread of light is evenly distributed and allows you to use less modules per project, giving you an obvious cost saving. There are also Surface mounted and Wired LED modules available on the market, these are good products but do have a lesser beam angle.

3) the surface that you are illuminating onto - once again spotting has been a huge reason that people have shied away from using LEDs in such applications. We have various solutions for this and depending on the application can achieve an equal illumination for every project.

A lot of our customers use our in-house calculation team to best advise on the required modules, converters and ways of installing the LEDs to achieve the required illumination.
Please feel free to give me a call and I will endeavour to provide you with enough information so that you can make a confident decision when choosing your LED modules.
